Longfellow & Seward

Basement Cleanout in
Longfellow & Seward

Longfellow and Seward (55406) run down to the Mississippi river gorge — Craftsman and bungalow homes with full basements, mixed in with a lot of owner-occupied duplexes, in one of the most co-op-minded, environmentally-conscious parts of the city. We do two jobs here: clearing a full basement and carrying it up the stairs, and turning over a duplex unit between tenants. Either way we lean hard on donation and recycling — Bridging and the Habitat ReStore before the transfer station — at one flat, photo-quoted price with Minnesota sales tax already inside it, no stair surcharge, often same-day.

Two jobs by the river: the basement and the duplex turnover

Longfellow, Seward, Cooper and Howe are the family neighborhoods that stretch east to the river gorge and the Minnehaha parkway — walkable, bike-heavy, home to the Seward co-op crowd and a lot of small landlords who live in one half of the owner-occupied duplex they rent out. That shapes the work. Half our jobs here are the classic full-basement cleanout in a Craftsman or bungalow — a lifetime of boxes, old furniture, the workbench, a dead chest freezer — carried up the steep interior stairs. The other half are between-tenant turnovers: a renter moves out of the up-down duplex, leaves a couch, a mattress, a bike and a basement locker's worth of stuff, and the owner needs the unit cleared and ready to show before the next lease starts.

We handle both the same way — a crew that carries it all out, one flat number scoped from your photos that already covers the labor, the disposal, the drive and Minnesota sales tax, and a heavy bias toward giving usable things a second life rather than dumping them.

Donation-first, because this neighborhood expects it

Nowhere in Minneapolis is the "we donate, not dump" promise more at home than the Seward/Longfellow river belt, and we mean it here. Reusable furniture and household goods go to Bridging, the Twin Cities furniture bank that hands them straight to families setting up a home. Doors, cabinets, light fixtures and building materials from a duplex refresh go to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. E-waste — TVs, monitors, computers, which Minnesota law bans from the trash statewide — is diverted to the county electronics program, not landfilled, and appliances get their metal recycled. What's left after all that is what goes to disposal, which keeps both the tonnage and your flat price down. On a downsizing or estate clear it comes with a donation receipt for your records.

What a Longfellow basement or duplex clear covers

  • Full basement cleanouts — the whole basement carried up the stairs: boxes, furniture, tools, damp storage, shelving.
  • Between-tenant duplex turnovers — a unit and its basement locker cleared of whatever the last tenant left, ready to show.
  • Detached garage & attic — the alley garage and the space under the roofline, often on the same visit.
  • Appliances & e-waste — an old washer, dryer or fridge (freon recovered), a stack of TVs and monitors diverted the right way.
  • Downsizing & estate clears — a long-held river-gorge home emptied with a donation receipt.

Longfellow basement cleanout pricing

Priced flat as truck-fill — by how much actually comes out — photo-quoted before we roll. The basement stairs, the disposal, the donation routing and Minnesota sales tax are all in it.

Truck-fill (3/8)$338
Truck-fill (1/2) — a packed basement$431
Truck-fill (5/8)$513
Truck-fill (3/4) — basement + unit$587

Carried up the stairs — no surcharge, in the snow too

The Craftsman and bungalow basements near the gorge are reached by the same steep, narrow interior stairs as the rest of the city's older stock, and that's where some haulers start adding a basement fee. We don't — the crew carries it all up and the flat quote never moves because of the stairs. Two river-adjacent realities we take in stride: damp, musty spring-melt boxes (the low basements near the river get a little wet each thaw — the cardboard goes soft, we bag it and carry it), and winter access down icy back steps and a snow-packed alley, which we work in at the same flat price, no winter surcharge.

Why not just use the city's bulk pickup?

For a landlord turning a unit or a homeowner clearing a basement, the city program barely helps. Minneapolis Large Item Collection gives municipal garbage customers one free bulk pickup a year, then $30 an item, up to two large items a week set at the curb by 6 a.m. (schedule at 612-673-2917). A single tenant's leftovers — a couch, a mattress, a dresser, a bike, and a basement locker of boxes — blows past two items a week for a month, and none of it walks itself up from the basement to the curb. Our lane is exactly that gap: same-day, full-service, inside the unit, carried up from the basement, as many items as it takes, one flat price with the tax already in it.

What Longfellow & Seward customers say

★★★★★

"Forty years in the same Longfellow bungalow — the basement was a museum. They carried it all up those stairs and made a point of donating what they could to Bridging. Flat price from a photo, tax already in it."

— Barb E., Longfellow
★★★★★

"I live in the upper of our Seward duplex and rent the lower. Tenant left a mess in the unit and the basement locker. They cleared it same-day, hauled the couch and mattress, recycled the old TV. Ready to show by the weekend."

— Nate H., Seward
★★★★★

"We care where our stuff ends up. They took the reusable furniture to the furniture bank and the old cabinets to the ReStore, and only the real junk went to disposal. No stair fee for the basement. Exactly what I wanted."

— Priya M., Howe

Longfellow basement questions, answered

Do you do between-tenant duplex turnovers?
Yes — clearing the unit and its basement locker and getting it ready to show, often same-day.

How much do you actually donate or recycle?
As much as we can — Bridging for furniture, Habitat ReStore for materials, county programs for e-waste and appliances; only the rest goes to disposal.

Will you carry a full basement up the stairs?
Yes — up the narrow stairs, no surcharge; it's in the flat price.

Are damp spring-melt boxes a problem?
No — normal near the river, and it's the job. We bag and haul it either way.

How much for a whole basement?
Truck-fill — a quarter $241, a half $431, three-quarters $587, a full truck $732 — with single pieces flat.

How soon, and is Minnesota sales tax extra?
Same-day is often available — and no, the roughly 9.025% tax is already inside your flat quote.
