Basement Cleanouts: The Twin Cities Specialty

Few metros have housing this old. The first-ring suburbs aren’t much younger — Robbinsdale’s typical home dates to 1956, Crystal’s and Richfield’s to 1959 — and nearly all of it sits over a basement.

City Bulk Pickup in Minneapolis & St. Paul — Where It Stops

Both cities run a bulky-item program, and both are worth using when your items fit. Here’s where each one ends.

City of Minneapolis

Up to two large items a week for City garbage customers in buildings of one to four units. Each piece goes out by 6 a.m. with a “For Solid Waste” note; appliances, electronics, and mattresses go on recycling day. No building materials, and no furniture that has been taken apart.

City of St. Paul

Twelve free bulky items per cart per year, labeled “bulky” and set by the cart by 6 a.m. After the twelfth, every item carries a per-item fee plus tax. Construction debris, drywall, tires, and concrete aren’t accepted. Mattresses have their own free recycling program.

The Suburbs

Outside the two cities, bulky pickup runs through whichever company hauls your garbage, and each one sets its own terms. Ask your hauler first; when the answer is a fee and a week’s wait, a flat photo quote is worth comparing.

Apartments & Towers

Buildings with five or more units aren’t part of either city program. That covers downtown towers, Riverside Plaza, and many of the larger walk-ups in Uptown and Whittier — residents there need a private hauler for anything big.
