Uptown & Lyn-Lake
Apartment Cleanout in
Uptown & Lyn-Lake
A third-floor walk-up off Hennepin, no elevator, and a couch and mattress that have to be gone before the lease turns — that's the classic Uptown move-out, and it's ours. We carry it down the stairs, deal with the tight street parking, and haul the whole apartment same-day. You don't drag a thing to the curb. Send a photo, get the exact flat price — a queen mattress is $103, a sofa $126, a full apartment goes by truck-fill from $241 — with no stair or elevator surcharge and Minnesota sales tax already inside it.
How an Uptown apartment cleanout works
Three steps, and the stair-carry — the hard part — is on us:
- Send a photo. Show us the apartment and tell us the floor and the stairwell: a third-floor walk-up in a 1920s building, a duplex up a back staircase, a tight interior stair. That's how we confirm the flat price and the carry.
- Get the exact flat price. A queen mattress is $103, a sofa $126; a whole apartment is a truck-fill from $241 (quarter) to $732 (full). The number already covers the multi-flight carry-down, the disposal, and the roughly 9.025% MN sales tax — with no surcharge for stairs or a missing elevator.
- We carry it down and haul it. A vetted, insured crew lifts everything from inside the unit, carries it down the stairs, stages the truck as close as the block allows, and loads it. Same-day when a slot is open — the pace a lease-end needs.
The Uptown reality: no elevator, no problem
Uptown, Lyn-Lake, CARAG, and ECCO are some of the densest renter blocks in the city — 1900s-1920s three-story walk-up apartments, owner-occupied duplexes, and condos packed around Bde Maka Ska and the Lyn-Lake corridor. Almost none of the walk-ups have an elevator, so the whole job is the stair-carry: a queen mattress and box spring down two flights, a sleeper sofa around a tight landing, a dresser through a narrow 1915 doorway. That's not a problem to price around — it's the service. We bring the straps, the dolly, and the second set of hands, and we carry it down, no elevator, no surcharge, in the flat price. Add the notoriously tight street parking and the high renter churn, and Uptown is exactly the neighborhood a full-service, carry-it-out crew was made for.
How much does an Uptown apartment cleanout cost?
Flat and photo-quoted, before we arrive. The stair-carry, the disposal, and MN sales tax are all inside the number — the same price whether it's a ground-floor unit or a third-floor walk-up.
| Item / Job | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Queen mattress | $103 |
| Twin / full mattress | $111 / $94 |
| Box spring | $92 |
| Sofa | $126 |
| Loveseat / futon | $160 / $111 |
| Dresser | $126 |
| Studio / small apartment (quarter truck) | $241 |
| 1–2 bedroom move-out (half truck) | $431 |
| Whole apartment / duplex unit (full truck) | $732 |
$75 minimum. Mattress + couch together is just those two items; a full move-out is priced by truck-fill. Stair-carry, disposal, and MN sales tax included — no stair or elevator surcharge.
For reference, traditional full-service junk companies typically quote $150–$600+ per truckload after an in-person estimate, and some add stair fees. We quote it flat from a photo, stairs included, tax included.
4 ways to clear an Uptown apartment
| Option | Cost | Speed | Who carries it down | Stairs / parking? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City Large Item Collection | 1 free/yr, then $30/item | Next pickup, 2/week cap | You — down the stairs to the curb by 6am | Your problem, both |
| Haul it yourself to a Hennepin drop-off | ~$41/ton + item fees | Your Saturday (Tue–Sat 9–5) | You — carry, load a rental, drive | Your problem, both |
| Curbside "free" pile | $0, but often a code violation | Whenever someone grabs it | You — and it may sit for weeks | Your problem, both |
| Traditional full-service junk company | $150–$600+, sometimes + stair fee | Scheduled, 1–3 days out | Their crew | Sometimes an extra charge |
| JunkRabbit | From $75, flat & tax in, no stair fee | Same-day when open | Our insured crew, down the stairs | Both handled |
The punchline in a walk-up: every free or cheap option ends with you hauling a mattress down three flights and finding a parking spot on a packed block. We do the carry and stage the truck ourselves — no stair surcharge either way.
Does the City of Minneapolis pick up apartment furniture?
Only through curbside Large Item Collection, and for a walk-up move-out it barely helps. Municipal garbage customers get one free bulk pickup a year, then $30 per item, and crews take up to two large items a week if they're at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day (schedule at 612-673-2917). Two problems for an Uptown apartment: an emptied one-bedroom is easily eight or ten large items, not two, so a whole move-out would take a month of weekly pickups; and the program is curbside — you still have to carry every piece down the stairs and out to the boulevard yourself, exactly the part that's hard. Your other self-serve option is hauling it to a Hennepin County drop-off (Brooklyn Park at 8100 Jefferson Hwy or South Hennepin at 1400 W 96th St, Bloomington, ~$55/ton plus item fees like $25 per mattress). We take the whole apartment in one same-day trip and do the carrying.
What we clear from an Uptown apartment
- Whole move-outs — a lease-end apartment emptied to the walls, same-day.
- Mattress + couch together — the most common job: a mattress and a sofa and their frames, gone in one trip.
- Duplex turnover — a small landlord clearing a unit between tenants in the Lyn-Lake duplex stock.
- Single heavy pieces — one sleeper sofa, one dresser, one desk, carried down from a high floor.
- Roommate splits & downsizing — clearing what nobody's taking when the household breaks up.
- Furniture & general junk — see our furniture removal page for the full catalog.
What happens to it after pickup
Renter turnover leaves a lot of perfectly good furniture behind, and we'd rather donate it than dump it. Reusable sofas, dressers, and household goods are routed to Bridging (the Twin Cities furniture bank), Goodwill, and Arc's Value Village; mattresses are taken to be recycled where the steel, foam, and fiber are recovered rather than landfilled. Hennepin County's tipping fee is moderate — around $55 a ton — and much of the region's real waste is burned for energy at the downtown HERC plant rather than buried, so keeping usable pieces in circulation is easy to do and doesn't inflate your flat price. You get an empty apartment; the good stuff goes back into a home.
When you need an Uptown apartment cleanout
- Lease-end move-out — everything gone before the walkthrough and the deposit.
- Duplex or unit turnover — a landlord resetting a Lyn-Lake unit between tenants.
- Upgrading furniture — the new mattress or couch is coming and the old one has to go, down the stairs.
- Roommate change or breakup — clearing the shared furniture nobody's keeping.
- Downsizing into a smaller place — letting go of what won't fit the next apartment.
Why Uptown chooses JunkRabbit
- No stair or elevator surcharge — the multi-flight carry-down is in the flat price, always.
- We do the carry — from inside the unit to the truck; you never drag a mattress to the curb.
- Same-day, parking handled — the speed a lease-end needs, and we stage the truck ourselves.
- Flat photo-quoted price — the exact number up front, MN sales tax already in it.
- Mattress + couch, whole apartments, single pieces — one item or the whole place, same crew.
What Uptown renters say
"Third-floor walk-up off Lyndale, no elevator, and I had to be out by the 31st. They carried the mattress, box spring, and my old sectional down all three flights, dealt with the parking, and were done in under an hour. Flat price, tax included, no stair fee."
"I rent out the upper of a duplex near Bde Maka Ska and needed it cleared between tenants. Same-day, they hauled the whole unit's leftover furniture down the back stairs. Easiest turnover I've had."
"Just needed the old queen mattress and couch gone when the new ones arrived. Booked from a photo, they came the same day, carried both down from the second floor, one flat price. No surprise charges at all."
